Summary: | In 1800 Captain Robert Frasea drew attention to the natural advantages of Greystones as a harbour of refuge on the east coast, but nothing was done to develop a harbour here until the 1880s. As the fishing failed in 1864, the fisherman took to building, following the coming of the railway. By 1887, however, a small pier was erected, but it soon became evident that it was unsafe, even though a north groyne had been built between 1889 and 1894. Following the wrecking in 1911, insurance for boats in Greystones became impossible and the harbour fell into decay. In 1968 the base of Kish Lighthouse was brough to give protection to the harbour |
