Summary:The centre was opened on the 1st July 1993 to tell the story of Navan Fort. Navan was sufficiently important to have been recorded in the second century A.D. by Ptolemy on his Map of the World, but nothing overtly remains today except a pleasant grassy mound; hence the need for an interpretive centre. The proposal to construct a centre and then the siting of buildings near the fort caused fierce contoversy. It was opposed by some archaeologists and learned bodies. People from all over the world wrote expressing their views as to whether or not the centre should be built.
