In early times the surrounding low lands would have been flooded giving the hill the appearance of a Grannog. A raised road leads out to the hill. Again in times of flooding this read would have appeared as a causeway. It was said a monastery existed at Clonleigh about 630 ad in 1945. A Papal bulla or seal was found by a man who was ploughing the surrounding field. The seal was that of Pope John XX111 who was diposed in 1415.
