Summary:	The Shannon hydro-electric scheme at Ardnacrusha was a major project undertaken by the Irish Free State. Built under the leadership of the German firm Siemens-Schuchertwerke, works commenced in 1925 after the passing of the Shannon Electricity Act, 1925. The scheme was the beginning of the electrification of the country and led to the establishment of the Electricity Supply Board (ESB).
