Notes: | In 1739 Charles O’Hara (the elder) married Lady Mary Carmichael, a daughter of the Earl of Hyndford, and sister of William Carmichael, later Church of Ireland archbishop of Dublin. He was appointed High Sheriff of County Sligo in 1740 and sat as MP for Ballinakill in Queen’s County and for Armagh in the Irish House of Commons. Through his political activities he became friendly with Edmund Burke with whom he conducted an extensive correspondence. His surviving political papers reflect his interest in Irish economic affairs. They include an extremely useful undated account of the different factions within the Irish House of Commons, with Charles O’Hara (the elder’s) comments on individual MPs and their allegiances.
