Summary:The Hearts of Steel [also known as 'Steelboys'] were a Protestant movement established in 1769 in Co. Antrim due to grievances concerning the doubling of rents and unjust evictions. On 2 March 1772, the Hearts of Steel, held a demonstration in Gilford, Co. Down which was attended by over 800 people. This memorandum details the Hearts of Steel disturbances in the province of Ulster - these were so widespread in 1772 that the Irish government passed legislation to severely punish those who were seen to have caused disorder [by the latter half of 1772, the army was sent into the province of Ulster and many members of the exclusively Protestant Hearts of Steel were hanged].
