Summary: | Handbill for the first production of "Exiles" by James Joyce, directed by Harold Pinter in The Mermaid Theatre, London. Printed in orange coloured font on light yellow coloured paper, featuring the silhouettes of four figures - two men standing, a seated woman and a woman standing, seen in profile at bottom left of sheet. "Exiles" was Joyce's only extant play (it was published on 25 May 1918 by Jonathan Cape) and draws on his short story "The Dead", from his collection "Dubliners". A production of the play was rejected by W.B. Yeats [for production by the Abbey Theatre, Dublin]. The Mermaid Theatre was located on the site of Puddle Dock and Curriers' Alley at Blackfriars in the City of London; in September 2008 the Corporation of London City Planning Committee granted a certificate that stripped the former playhouse of its theatre status and as of 2018 it operates as a conference centre called The Mermaid London.
