| Summary: | Card with initials of the artist 'E.C.Y.' [Elizabeth Corbett Yeats] printed lower left within image present on card, featuring a hand-coloured illustration of a large candelabra with three branches, each of which has a lit candle. The candelabra is placed on top of a table that is laden with a vase of blue coloured flowers; at right of scene in the foreground is a bowl of fruit in which grapes, lemons, oranges, a banana and peaches are depicted. Other bowls, piled high with foodstuffs are present in the background. Elizabeth Corbet [often known as ‘Lollie’] Yeats, (1868–1940), and Susan Mary [often known as 'Lily'] Yeats, (1866-1949), separated from the Dun Emer Guild in 1908, forming The Cuala Industries; Elizabeth controlled the press while Susan Mary was responsible for the embroidery division. [The original Bute House, Brook Green, London, now demolished, belonged to the Marquis of Bute. The house was first used as a school in 1918 by Belgian refugees; four years later it became the boarding house for St Paul's Girls' School until the Second World War, when it was then requisitioned by the British Army. This card may refer to two of the teachers - a Miss Cunningham and a Dame Christian - employed at the school and residing in the boarding house, who commissioned this invitation card from the Cuala Press to send to those they wished to invite to one of their 'At Home' evenings, an open house for those interested in and involved with the arts to gather and meet]. |
