Summary: | Handbill issued by the Barnes and McCormack Appeal Committee. Peter Barnes and James McCormack [alias Richards] were tried, convicted and sentenced for complicity in the IRA's Coventry bombing of 25 August 1939, [part of the S-Plan or Sabotage Campaign of the IRA during 1939-1940] in which 5 people died and 50 others were injured (when a bomb placed on the carrier of a bicycle exploded in a crowded street in Broadgate Centre). The incident led to emergency legislation being passed in both in the UK and in Ireland. A campaign for clemency was organised by the Barnes and McCormack Appeal Committee headed by Maud Gonne MacBride but the campaign was unsuccessful and the two were hanged in Winson Green Prison, Birmingham on 7 February 1940. |
