Summary:Republican leaflet addressed to Bishop Michael Browne of Galway in the aftermath of comments made by him at a meeting of the Galway C.Y.M.S [Catholic Young Men’s Society] which condemned the actions of the I.R.A.. With reference to Pope Pius XII [appointed Pope on 2 March 1939] and his predessors Pope Pius XI and Pope Benedict XV and their views on the political situation in Ireland and references to politics in Italy [Mussolini and the Blackshirts]. Bishop Michael J. Browne was Browne was appointed Bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh by Pope Pius XI on August 6 1937 and later became known for his support of Éamon de Valera's defense of Garda searches for cached I.R.A. arms and arrests of members of the I.R.A. in the late 1930s. The Emergency Powers Act 1939 [enacted on 3 September 1939, after an official state of emergency was declared in Ireland on 2 September 1939] gave the Irish government under Éamon De Valera many extra powers concering censorship, internment etc. which are alluded to in this leaflet.
