| Summary: | Broadside poster in support of Arthur Griffith for the East Cavan by-election held on on 20 June 1918 (as a result of the death of Samuel Young of the Irish Parliamentary Party on 18 April 1918). J. F. O'Hanlon, who was a member of Cavan Urban District Council was the Irish Parliamentary Party candidate. Text continues: "I am not making a recruiting speech for it is not my affair if not a single man out of this hall enlists; but I say to you that this is a war in which every man who can ought to go out to fight the cause of the Belgians". At bottom of sheet, printed in bold font: "Do You want a Man or a Wobbler to represent You? If you want a Man, VOTE FOR GRIFFITH". At the time of issue of this poster Arthur Griffith served on the Anti-Conscription Committee, formed in Dublin in April 1918. Griffith won the seat in this by-election and refused to take his seat at Westminster; he was re-elected for the seat in the general election of 1918. |
