The letter writers were prominent men in the political life of Britain and Ireland. Richard Rigby was Paymaster of the Forces; John Cradock was Archbishop of Dublin; Welbore Ellis was Secretary for the Colonies; the Earl of Buckinghamshire became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in December 1776; John Irvine (or Irwin) was Commander-in-Chief of the army in Ireland; Charles Jenkinson was an influential adviser to the British Prime Minister, Lord North, and was later made Secretary at War; George Germain (Sackville) was Secretary of State for America; George Townshend (1st Marquess Townshend) was Lieutenant-General of the Ordnance, and a former Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, who had carried through in Ireland policies which strengthened British control over Irish government; Sir Joseph Yorke (later Baron Dover) was Britain's ambassador to the Hague; James Fitzgerald was a lawyer and member of the Irish House of Commons; Robert Craggs Nugent (Earl Nugent) was an Irish politician; John Hely-Hutchinson was a politician and Provost of Trinity College, Dublin; John Beresford and Charles Bingham (Earl of Lucan) were prominent politicians. Edmond Sexten Pery was Speaker of the Irish House of Commons, and opposed the Act of Union. The last letter in the volume is headed 'Earl of Buckingham, Lord Lieutenant' though possibly it is an error and should be Earl of Buckinghamshire. The letter is dated 20th October; no year is given.
