Summary: | Contains Hamilton's correspondence with friends and family, notably her sister Elizabeth Kelly, her cousin the poet Mary Tighe, her mother Sarah Tighe, her husband Charles Hamilton and daughter Sarah Howard. Her letters relate for the most part to family life and mutual friends, but also touch on domestic matters such as the employment of servants and the appropriate conduct for women, and social conditions in Ireland. Also included are documents relating to both the Tighe and Hamilton families, which she transcribed and compiled. |

Notes: | Marianne Caroline Hamilton (1777-1861) was the second and youngest daughter of William Tighe, of Rossana, Co. Wicklow and Sarah (née Fownes). A talent artist, she received instruction from the art master John Inigo Spilsbury of Harrow, England. In 1801 she married Charles Hamilton of Hamwood, near Dunboyne, Co. Meath. Herself an amateur poet and memoirist, Hamilton was a first cousin and sister-in-law of the poet Mary Tighe. Physical description: 17 folders. more |
