Main Creator: Forbes, Ernest, 1879-1962
Summary:Caption reads: Hamar: "A finer army than Cromwell's." An alternative title is handwritten at top right in ink above the image but is crossed out in pencil; it reads: "Hamar Reviews His Auxiliaries" [The Auxiliary Division of the Royal Irish Constabulary, known as the Auxiliaries or Auxies, was a paramilitary unit of the RIC established in July 1920 during the War of Independence. It was (in the main) made up of former British Army officers from Great Britain and became infamous for their reprisals on civilians and civilian property in revenge for IRA actions, in particular the burning of Cork, 11-12 December 1920]. Illustration depicts Hamar Greenwood observing his 'army' as they march past - they are skeletons wearing military uniform. One of them salutes Greenwood and carries a can of petrol in the other hand; another has the words "The Law" written on its back. A figure in the centre of the scene wears a hooded robe on which the word "Destitution" is written.
