Summary: | The causeway in this photograph was erected by the students of Birr Community School as an Ecology Project. It extends for several hundred yards across this beautiful area of preserved bogland at Killyaun near Birr. This is one of the finest stretches of raised bog in Europe. Raised bogs began their life about 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. The presence here of wild flowers, plants, sedges, mosses, myriads of wildlife and gorse which can now be seen at close range, thanks to the causeway, is truly wonderful |
