Summary:Sheep farming particularly hill sheep farming has long been a feature of the west of Ireland. The hills and uplands of the Mizen area are no exception, the Scottish Blackface, Suffolk & Cheviot breeds being the most popular. During past centuries sheep were invaluable as they supplied food and clothing - today they have an added bonus as they qualify for E.U. premier headage payments which is of major economic importance in the poorer farming areas. Unfortunately these payments can also have adverse effects as sheep numbers have dramatically increased causing serious ecological problems on some hillside pastures.
