Summary:A good sheep dog is a sheep farmer's best friend. The Wicklow Collie, as seen here and the Border Collie, are the most popular breeds. Bred by local farmers, they are trained when they reach an age of five or six months and begin to show an interest in sheep. The price of a good sheep dog could vary from £500 to £800. Pups sell from £50 to £60. Sheep dogs may also be trained to take part in Sheep Dog Trials. The life span of a collie is short, maybe only fifteen years. Usually, he is retired from hill work at eight years but continues to be the owner's loyal farmyard friend.
