Summary: | 12B Northumberland Avenue first shows up in the Thoms Directory 1888, but was prpbably built long before most of the houses on the avenue as it stands so far back from the main line of houses. It is interesting to note that the drains and mains water for the cottage originally came from outside No 51 Mulgrave Street (formerly Rumley Avenue).12B is in fact one of a pair of cottages, each one sharing the one chimney breast in the middle. The father of the present owner, Robert Brennan, first rented 12B as a tenant of the Pembroke Estate, in 1908. It was then known as Janeville Cottage but this was later changed to avoid confusion, there being a "Janeville" on Tivoli Road. The rateable value at this time was £80. The tenant before Mr Brennan's father was a Mr Grant, the foreman of the service/maintenance section of the Pembroke Estate. The cottage is soundly constructed with walls two foot thick consisting of granite faced with red brick and plastered over. Something else unique about this house, Mr Brennan who purchased the property in 1960, is the only person on the avenue that owns the strip of land at the back of his house that makes up a narrow lane leading out to Mulgrave Street. |
