Summary:Dundalgan motte, reputed birthplace of Cuchullan, known locally as Cuchullan's Castle or Mount. Situated at Mount Avenue approximately half a mile from the town centre. It is an original Norman Motte with bailey since destroyed. The ruin on top was a castellated house built by Patrick 'The Pirate' Byrne in 1780 for his grandnephew Henry Byrne. This house contained the original Co. Louth Archaeological Society museum between 1911 and 1922 when it was burned down.
