Summary: | Market Square is part of Old Birr. Many of the houses in this area of the town are built over 17th Century foundations. An old market house once stood in the Square, which was also used as a courthouse and as a position from which to defend, or attack, the castle. On the site of the Market House there now stands a monument iin memory of the Manchester Martyrs who were executed in Manchester in 1867. One of the martyrs, Michael Larkin, was born nearby, in Lusmagh. The monument was erected in 1894 and was unveiled by O'Donovan Rossa. This monument has seen many historic events in the commercial and social life of the town. |
