Summary:This gateway was erected to commerate the achievements of a company of local men who joined grattens volunteers (1778-9) the gateway was built by walter laurence (1726-96) the laurence family were descended from a lancashire follower of sir John Perrot who married the daughter of O'Madden of longford castle near Portumna towards the close of the 16th century.
