Summary:Conway Square was laid out in 1770 by Robert Stewart who owned the town and surrounding lands. The Market House was built at the same time to a design of Ferdinando Stratford, a Bristol engineer. The ground floor was originally an open space where a market could be held, access being gained through six archways. There was also a larger central arch through which a carriageway passed. The market house was attacked by insurgents during the 1798 rebellion. It served as the town hall for many years and now serves as the Ards Arts Centre.
