Summary:This is a picturesque scene of a tree-lined avenue and beautiful houses. In the background to the right is the Garda Station with its old cutstone facade(may not be too visible from this angle). The hotel is recent. For the last half century or so, this was the famous Devine's tea shop. Tea with the Devine's label was sent all over Ireland at one time. Around the turn of the century it was also a hotel called Argue's, having been bought by Henry Argue in 1878 from its previous owner. It name before 1878 was Lifford House. In the early years of this century, a young teacher from Bolton, Lancashire called Arthur Fowweather came to Lifford to teach at Prior School there. He stayed at Argue's Hotel and writes with great humour of his time both in Argue's and around Lifford and Strabane. His book is "ONE SMALL HEAD", published 1980, printed by the "Down Recorder", Downpatrick.
