Summary: | Ballycastle experienced and industrial boom in the 1750s when Hugh Boyd, the local landlord, had built a harbour and was operating coalmines, ironworks, a saltworks, a soapworks, a brickworks, a bleachgreen, four tanneries, a brewery and a glassworks. Unfortunately his descendants were not interested in trade and fifty years after his death there was little sign of his work. Continous silting filled his outer dock sand and rendered useless for shipping and today all that remains is a sandy beach which provides safe bathing for toddlers. |
