Summary: | High Street was the first street to be laid out by Sir Hugh Montgomery when he founded the new town at the beginning of the 17th Century. The street followed a spring line which provided fresh water for the residents. The market cross was built in 1636 and originally resembled that at Edinburgh by having a flat roof surrounded by a stone column 20 ft high, on top of which there was a carved lion. The cross was destroyed by Commonwealth troops in 1653 and was replaced by the present conical structure in 1666. |
