Summary:Court Street, one of the first streets to be laid out in Newtownards, takes its name from the Court which was held in the ruins of the Domnican Priory from 1817 to 1860. The Priory was founded by the Anglonorman Savage family in 1244. It was a place of great wealth and importance until the dissolution of the monasteries in the mid 16th century. It was destroyed by the Irish in 1580. The Tower was built as a residence by a Scots planter, Sir Hugh Montgomery, in 1607. It is now in state care.
