Summary: | Numerous black plastic-covered mushroom houses abound in the Keady area. A recent trend in the use of stronger green plastic is now evident. The frame tunnel construction incorporates a thick insulation layer sandwiched between two sheets of plastic Growers usually have three or four heated houses. They purchase 500-1200 20kg bags of pasteurised compost sufficient to fill each house. Laid out 2-4m wide on a concrete floor, the bags yield 180-270kg of mushroom per tonne of compost, over a 10-12 week cycle. The dozen or so growers around Keady contribute to a £15 million industry in Northern Ireland. |
