Summary: | Written at top of sheet: The board of guardians: - Greeenwood - Law - Long - S[...] - Carson. Published in The Freeman's Journal under the title "The Listowel debate" (a debate on what was known as The ‘Listowel mutiny’ which began on 17 June 1920, when RIC [Royal Irish Constabulary] officers under the command of County Inspector O'Shea refused to be relocated out of their rural police station in Listowel, Co. Kerry to be moved to other areas and also refused Lt. Col. Gerald Bryce Ferguson Smyth's new policy regarding rules of engagement with the IRA and their supporters where police were told that they could shoot if a suspect failed to surrender 'when ordered to do so'. 14 of the RIC men resigned. Smyth was assassinated by IRA volunteers on 17 July 1920 in the Cork & County Club]. |
