Summary:Account of the events that led to his arrest in January 1920 for the display of a Republican ballad in one of the family's shops. It appears that he may not have been aware of the offending item, which was displayed by an employee, but at all events he was sentenced to three months' imprisonment in Mountjoy Jail, with a further three unless he undertook to keep the peace, under the D.O.R.A. (Defence of the Realm Act).


"On Friday, January 9th 1920, a peddlar called at my son's shop, (184a Parnell Street) and sold some ballads, amongst them one styled 'The Ashtown Road'. As a matter of I knew nothing of the above (it being no bussiness [sic] of mine) until informed sometime after..."
