Morning Mary has a special affection for Thomas Wynne and his collection of photographs. The first of the Wynne images posted here was an albumen print as is this one. After emigrating to the US where his wife died leaving him with a child he returned to Ireland and founded a photographing dynasty with his many children scattering throughout the country and continuing the family profession. Main Street, Ballinrobe looks so quiet and remote in this image and the almost pink shading really gives the sense of age!

You can see the class division in action, the gentlemen are on the pavements and the two labourers stand in the gutter.

.....for "BBC balance" (biggest apologies to NLI .. I am sure RTE have related protocols).... cats... was late 19th., early 20thoC Ireland devoid of Felix domesticus... banished by St Brigid (?) to keep Padhraig on his game. Either side, all praise to the NLI staff and volunteers who have regularly hit "explore"
