On the day when the remains of the late singer, and songwriter Shane McGowan will be driven through the streets of Dublin on his way to his funeral mass and interment, this lovely Clarke image seems appropriate! A Daimler being driven up Kildare Street, with lots of bystanders, and an almost photobomber in view!

Have the street numbers changed since Mr Clarke's day? GoogleMaps sent me to the wrong place. KildareView - maps.app.goo.gl/n9xiRtPjEmp3Z9sRA

The flag says "MAPLE HOTEL", seen in an earlier French/Lawrence photo from the other end of the block. No fancy electric lamp-posts - catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000333251

This car, on the road when the system was introduced, would be a low number, probably Dublin.

I think the car is a Daimler Twenty-Two, from April 1902 onwards ... From - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daimler_Twenty-Two

Swan necked lamppost, we are not sure exactly when those appeared, replacing the tall posts of 1892.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] I think you could be right. Certainly all the business end stuff at the front (I'm a loss to motoring journalism) looks the same.

The Dublin Gazette also says Daimler, but thinks 1903 due to a big motoring event, including the Gordon Bennett, held that year. Car could easily be imported for that event and wouldn’t have local reg plate. “Daimler car on Kildare Street, around 1903. Cars, referred to as automobiles, were an unusual sight on Irish roads at the turn of the century, and it is likely that this car was in Dublin for the 1903 Automobile Fortnight. There was an influx of 1500 cars for the occasion and this provided the first opportunity for many Irish people to see a car. The Gordon Bennett Race, with a course through the roads of Carlow, Kildare and Laois, was one of the highlights of the event.” Picture: National Library of Ireland. www.google.com/searchbyimage?image_url=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.b...

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/91549360@N03] Jules Vambeck (late of 26 Stephen's Green) died June 2 1939. ('In Memoriam' notice from his widow in Irish Independent - Monday 2 June 1941) A Mademoiselle Vambeck (Jules' daughter Martguerite?) took part in the New Year's celebrations for French residents at M. Gammet's Hotel, including songs, recitations and music. (Dublin Evening Telegraph - Wednesday 02 January 1907). In May 1917 Jules attended a meeting at the Mansion House to promote a Flag Day to raise funds for the French Red Cross. (Dublin Daily Express - Saturday 19 May 1917)

I notice that the car is right hand drive, as is the Wiki photo. Was there any consensus in those early days?

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/184711311@N04] Maples are listed in house #25.1 25.2 is 13 Domestic Servants, presumably the maids etc in the Hotel. 25.3 2 or 3 male servants. The Hotel is listed as 25 to 28, but no-one is recorded in 26, 7 or 8.

In 1911, daughter Charlotte is less fancy and lists herself as Hotel Keeper. Visitors and staff are all listed together.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/30369211@N00/] The street numbering appears strange, we have Jules at no. 26, next door to Stephens at no. 13

@184711311@N04/ I think that where that article starts with "Thanks to some intrepid sleuthing by NLI fans...", it's referring to all of us.

ɹǝqɯoɔɥɔɐǝq Pooching around in streetview, I see that the #26 address is today Adams auctioneers address on Stephen's Green, I think #26 in the photo was on the corner and the number is a Stephens Green number, not a Kildare St. number.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] The 25” shows no. 26 is an ‘L’ shaped property with frontages on both Stephen’s Green North and Kildare St. Next door no. 13 is the start of the Kildare St. numbers, the modern street view shows no. 15 to be the first of the Georgian buildings.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/184711311@N04] Agreed, except I see #14 on the streetview next to Adams today. I can't make the arched doors of 15, 16 today line up with the pic. OK, perhaps we can't see the door of 15 at all behind the corner, and arch at 16 has been rebuilt? NIAH makes no reference, but in Streetview we can see a shop window has been added on the ground floor.
