Notes: | Title inscribed in pen l.c. Watermark l.l. is part of a shield above the letter R (probably part of GR.) A copy of this plan was made in November 1799 by the Rev. Joseph Turner and is now preserved in the Royal Irish Academy manuscript 3.C.33, No. 48 (where no. 47 is a copy of the view of the same monument.) The number B 138 is inscribed in ink on verso. William Burton had lands in west Donegal and it is possible that he drew this megalithic tombs on one of his visits there and gave it later to Beranger to re-draw. Physical description: 1 drawing : pen & wash ; 19.2 x 27.6 cm. more |
Credits: | Attributed to William Burton (1733-1796) but the writing looks much more like that of Gabriel Beranger (ca. 1730-1817), whom Burton had been employing as a draftsman in collecting drawings. As Burton is unlikely to have given his title on a drawing done by himself, Beranger is more likely artist. Burton took on the name Conyngham in 1781 so the drawing is presumably before that date. |
