Of all the many rebels in this island's history, the name of Theobald Wolfe Tone stands out as the greatest of them all. Influenced by the events in France and America, he tried to bring the same change here to Ireland. When I saw Stafford Street I was really confused, as I thought that I had a good handle on the streets of the city centre, but this one has changed in more ways than a name change!

Surely the 1898 shield/plaque would be in the photo if it was after 1898 ? Wolfe Tone was born on 20 June 1763, which was a Monday. via - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfe_Tone

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] Good point. The c.1900 in NIAH records is sometimes given as something like 1890-1910, but in this case is says 1910-1930! Suggests to me that it used to say c.1920 and was edited.

“But that's not the end of the history of this brewery site as by May of 1897 it appears to have been bought and reopened as the Irish Crown Brewery Co. Limited with a similar strapline regarding supporting home trade, and selling hop bitter and hop stout. In August of that year they even launched a non-intoxicating 'Hop Lager' - Surely a first for Ireland if not further afield? - using pure Vienna hops and Irish malt, exhibiting it at the RDS horse show that year. They even get a mention for their flag display on Stafford Street where the procession stopped to admire the newly erected plaque on number 44 for the Wolfe Tone commemoration in 1898. (The plaque is still there by the way, just on a different building.)” beerfoodtravel.blogspot.com/2020/11/the-dublin-hop-stout-...

No sign of the 1898 plaque on no. 44, so photo is pre 1898

Keogh the auctioneers announced that Leechman & Cownie's letterpress and printing plant on Stafford St would be auctioned on 15th November 1899 (Dublin Daily Nation - Thursday 26 October 1899). Elsewhere there were winding-up petitions against the company.

Joshua Edmundson - 49, 50 and 51 Stafford Street and 34, 35 and 36 Capel Street in 1862 Thom's Directory. Kerr & Co were at number 44 at that stage. Although the numbers can change over time... www.libraryireland.com/Dublin-Street-Directory-1862/1283.php www.archiseek.com/2018/1870-j-edmondson-co-ironmongers-no...

Has anyone every figured out what the numbers on the William Lawrence photos mean? Are they in chonological order?

That innocuous looking archway bearing the Edmondson name was the rear entrance to an iron and brass manufactory, who also specialised in gas lighting. As the sign says “also Capel St,” In fact the premises extended to their retail shop at 33 - 36 Capel St., now occupied by McQuillans the well known tool shop. www.archiseek.com/2018/1870-j-edmondson-co-ironmongers-no... Following Edmondson’s death in 1848, the business was taken over by his brother-in-law, John Richardson Wigham, who became a pioneer in lighthouse beacons amongst other marine safety inventions. www.dib.ie/biography/wigham-john-richardson-a9032 (well worth a read) Another website says the business operated from 1831-1882 at no. 35 Capel St., mentioning furniture sales, however the address is the same. bifmo.furniturehistorysociety.org/entry/edmundson-co-1831... That could narrow the date range to 1882/3

Architecture of Dublin pictures with consecutive or nearby numbers in each set CAB, ROY and IMP are often taken on the same date or trip, which can sometimes be seen in details like a man up a ladder in more than one. But the numbers are not chronological, with sets from years later (per the buildings seen) mixed with earlier. There are also sometimes different sized negatives from the same day/visit, so a CABinet and a ROYal plate from the same time and place.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] Thank you Niall! So a unique identifier number? Rather than something like an invoice number which is also unique but usually in chronological order too! We need someone to crack the code

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/186395973@N06] It is a strange system, since the index numbers are marked on the negatives - surely they must have been done during the many years they were being taken, but then a group of earlier shots, years out of place, appear in the series. In general, it is a good guess that images nearby in location and index number are near or identical in date, but it is only a guess unless the details confirm it.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] May have been done by different people or maybe the digits represent some other time of filing system. I am not expert on the history of cataloguing but one would imagine they had some sort of decent referencing system.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] I've had a more thorough root around today and certainly the very early photos by WL are in the low numbers, I've found the oldest ones seem to be in the 10's and a good few in the single hundreds all very old
