Research by our Flickr Commons users established that according to legend, the huge ice-carved hollow of the Poisoned Glen near Dunlewey in Gweedore, got its name when Balor, the ancient one-eyed giant king of Tory, was killed here by his exiled grandson, Lughaidh. Poison from Balor’s eye split the rock and poisoned the glen. The cartographic story is that locals called it An Gleann Neamhe (The Heavenly Glen), but when an English cartographer mapped the area, he marked it An Gleann Neimhe (The Poisoned Glen).
