1795-1856.

Including a memorandum of the evidence Charles King O'Hara gave on agricultural conditions in County Sligo to the Devon Commission in 1844, as well as material relating to the Brunswick Society, Conservative political activity in County Sligo in the mid-nineteenth century, and his work as a Commissioner for Excise for County Sligo and County Donegal. Of particular interest is the material relating to his involvement in the relief of the poor in County Sligo both before and during the Famine.

Notes:Charles King O’Hara was born in 1785 and educated at Trinity College Dublin. He was a major in the County Sligo militia and also a justice of the peace for the county. In the early 18th century he served as a Commissioner of Excise for County Sligo and County Donegal. During the famine years he was a Poor Law Guardian for County Sligo, serving as Chairman of the Board in 1846-47 and as Treasurer of the Relief Committee for Lower Leyney. In his will he bequeathed the O’Hara estate to his nephew, Charles William Cooper, on the condition that he take the name O’Hara.
