Notes: | J. J. Clancy was an Irish Nationalist Politician and a MP in the House of Commons for North County Dublin from 1885 to 1918. He was born in Annaghdown, Co. Galway, on 15th July 1847, and educated at the College of Immaculate Conception, Athlone, and Queen's College, Galway. He taught Classics at Holy Cross School, Tralee, and married Margaret Hickie (d. 1912). Hickie's nephew was Piaras Béaslaí. Clancy was active in the Land League, Home Rule League, Young Ireland Society and Irish Labour and Industrial Union. He was appointed by the Irish Party as editor of the Irish Press Agency in London. He was a supporter of Charles Stewart Parnell and defended him after his affair with Katharine O'Shea was exposed. He was elected in July 1892 to the House of Commons. He was one of the five Irish Parliamentary Party representatives in the Irish Convention of 1917-1918. In the 1918 general election, he was defeated by the Sinn Féin candidate Frank Lawless.
