Firm friends from the day of Ernie O'Malley's funeral (27 March 1957), Helen Hooker O'Malley and celebrated author Mary Lavin had much in common. Both were American by birth, had remarried, and were mothers to three children. Each loved the land. They saw the soil as the essence of Ireland, a theme explored in Mary's writing and Helen's photography.

Exhibited as part of 'A Modern Eye: Helen Hooker O'Malley's Ireland', 20 June-2 November 2019 at the National Photographic Archive
