Additional papers of Joseph McGarrity,

1914-1971.

A small collection of notes, newscuttings and correspondence of the Irish-American republican organiser Joseph McGarrity. Included are draft articles relating to Irish politics, fragmentary jottings made by McGarrity on political meetings and conferences and largely undated letters to sent McGarrity from Irish-Americans and his friends and political associates in Ireland which shed light on the Irish-American political activity, societies and fundraising. Among those writing to McGarrity are Peter Golden of the Irish Progressive League, Richard M. Hurd of the American Defence Society, Eamon McGarrity and Nora Connolly O'Brien. Many letters are frequently incomplete, fragmentary and have no clear authorship.

Included are guidelines regarding a fundraising campaign to buy rifles (5 pp), notes relating to McGarrity's attendance at a meeting' addressed by Judge O'Sullivan (1 p), guidelines relating to the dissolution of the Irish American Club and the distribution of its funds (1 p), a typescript document issued by the Philadelphia branch of the Defence of Ireland Fund looking for donations and a fragment of a typescript document on how the US Congress could support Ireland. Also included is a copy letter, issued to the members and officers of Clan na Gael, requesting they release half of their branch funds.
