Description:Papers of Elizabeth O’Farrell and Julia Grenan, on activities in Cumann na mBan, c. 1915-1931; accounts, letters and papers relating to their participation in the Easter Rising, 1916- 1917; letters to O’Farrell and Grenan from various correspondents, 1926-1970; Letters and telegrams of sympathy sent to Grenan on the death of O’Farrell, 1957-1958; Receipts from the Kathleen Lynn Memorial Committee and the Republican Aid Committee, 1956-1971; Newspaper cuttings relating to O’Farrell and Grenan, 1928-1967; Photograph of Grenan’s funeral in Dublin, 1972.
Elizabeth O’Farrell was born on 5th November 1883 at 42 City Quay, Dublin. She shared a lifelong friendship with Julia Grenan, born in 1884 in Lombard Street, Dublin. Both were educated by the Sisters of Mercy and were members of the Sacred Heart and Total Abstinence sodalities. They were both dedicated Nationalists and joined the Irish Women’s Franchise League and the Irish Women’s Workers Union. In 1906 they joined Inghinidhe na hÉireann and subsequently joined the Inghinidhe branch of Cumann na mBan shortly after its foundation in 1914. They were trained in the use of firearms by Constance Markievicz. During the 1916 Easter Rising, O’Farrell and Grenan delivered dispatches, food and ammunition and cared for the wounded, including James Connolly. Patrick Pearse chose O’Farrell to seek surrender from the British army and both women continued to work for Cumann na mBan after the rising. They also worked for the IRA during the war of independence and opposed the 1921 Anglo-Irish treaty. They eventually resigned from Cumann na Mban in 1933 and the two lived together at 27 Lower Mount Street, Dublin. O’Farrell died on the 25th June, 1957 and Grenan on the 6th January, 1972. Both are buried together in the republican plot in Glasnevin cemetery, Dublin.
