Letters from Robert Cant to his family,

1925.

Robert Cant writes to his family, describing his trip from Birkenhead to Rangoon in Burma (now Myanmar) on board the Bibby Line ship 'S.S. Lancashire' in August and September 1925. He was aged 22 at the time and was travelling with a colleague, McAllister, to take up a position with Burma Railways. He writes mainly on the ship's stationery, in diary form, each packet being posted in the ports the ship called to enroute: Marseilles, Port Said and Colombo in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). When he arrives at his destination, Robert continues his letters on separate lined sheets of paper, telling about his posting to a place in the jungle 250 miles north of Rangoon, to survey the land for new lines. The last entry in this group of letters (which are carefully numbered by him) is dated 18th September and is written just before his journey north; he reminds his family how disappointed he was to find no letters from them when he arrived in Rangoon. Also a postcard written from Ceylon in early September, showing a Bibby Line cruise ship.
