McCartan states that though he understands McGarrity and Maloney are now Anti-Treaty supporters and that their support "is regarded by them here as a great asset", he stands by his support of the Treaty and says that "The Dail is now our only hope". McCartan also remarks that it was him that stopped Maloney seeing Liam Mellows before his execution as he did not know he would have no other opportunity.
