Frank Gallagher was born on 22 February in Cork and was educated at Presentation College Cork. Following this he became a journalist and began his career at the ‘Cork Free Press’ where he covered the historic Home Rule debates. Gallagher was a nationalist and was a member of the committee that invited Roger Casement to Cork to establish the Irish Volunteers. He later became involved with Sinn Féin and spoke all over Ireland during the general election campaign of 1918. During the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War he served as an officer in H company, 3rd battalion, Dublin brigade of the IRA. He also worked for the publicity staff of the underground republican movement. He was imprisoned in Mountjoy jail for two months in 1919 and was arrested again in 1920 when he commenced a hunger strike. He worked on the ‘Irish Bulletin’ under the editorship of Erskine Childers. Gallagher opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty and remained close to Éamon de Valera and Childers during the Civil War. He later became a publicist for de Valera and Fianna Fáil in 1927 and 1928 and accompanied de Valera on his tour in America. In 1931 he was appointed editor-in-chief of the Fianna Fáil newspaper the ‘Irish Press’. He resigned in 1935 due to the bad treatment of his staff. He was then appointed as deputy director of the Irish broadcasting service Radio Éireann. In 1939 he was appointed to director of the Government Information Bureau during the Emergency. He later became press officer for the Department of Health. When Fianna Fáil returned to power in 1951, he assumed the position of director of the Government Information Bureau until 1954. From 1954 to 1961 he served on the staff on the NLI and worked on preparations for a dictionary of national biography. He published numerous works such as the short story collection ‘Days of Fear’ in 1925 and ‘The Challenge of the Sentry’ in 1928. Gallagher died on 16 July 1962 in Dublin.
