Notes: | The letters are typed on the headed paper of the Ministry/Department of Defence and the Office of Chief of General Staff respectively. The name 'Ministry of Defence' has changed to 'Department of Defence' by January 1925, which date is stamped on the last letter. In the autumn of 1923 it was decided to reduce the strength of the army and to reorganise it for peacetime. This entailed a reduction of 30,000 personnel. W.T. Cosgrave was Acting Minister for Defence from 20th March to 21st November 1924. The first letter is signed by Cosgrave. Physical description: 4 items. more |
