In this letter John Devoy accuses William J. Maloney of orchestrating a campaign to make it look like "the National Council and Daniel F. Cohalan were opposed to sending money back to Ireland before there was any on hand to send while Philadelphia was keeping its money".

This letter related to the split in Clan na Gael which was precipitated in June 1920 by Éamon de Valera, who as President of the Irish Republic became involved in a dispute with Devoy and Judge Cohalan over lobbying US Presidential candidates on the issue of American recognition for the Irish Republic.
