Muriel Gahan Papers,

1930-1994.

Papers of Muriel Gahan, reflecting her work as a promoter of traditional crafts in Ireland and role in the establishment of The Country Shop, Country Workers Ltd., the Irish Homespun Society and Country Markets Ltd. The collection also sheds light of her active involvement in further organisations such as the Royal Dublin Society, the Irish Countrywomen's Association, Foras Éireann, Macra na Tuaithe, the Crafts Council of Ireland and the credit union movement. Also included are papers of Blanaid O'Reilly, concerning the work of the Conor Magee Trust which provided financial support for weavers in the Donegal Gaeltacht and with whom Gahan collaborated as an I.H.S. member.

Description:Contains for the most part circulars and letters from the I.H.S. secretary Mairin McDonald to the Society's membership concerning its contributions to the Royal Dublin Society's Spring Show. Also included is a letter to McDonald from C. C. Riddall, assistant secretary of the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society, enclosing a memo on the development of homespuns in Co. Donegal (25 Jan 1945), from McDonald to the editor of the 'Irish Press' newspaper, correcting an error in an article on the Society (23 Mar 1945), correspondence between McDonald and W. E. Wylie, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the R.D.S., concerning the Society's exhibitions at the Spring Show (1945) at the Dublin Horse Shows (1945-6), a draft letter to the Directors of Technical Education, concerning Government proposals to provide assistance to the homespun industry (29 April 1946) and letters to Gahan from Felix E. Hackett, concerning concerning his communications with the Minister of Lands regarding homespun tweed in Ireland, 23-24 Oct 1951.
