MacDonagh writes that he has been suffering from influenza since November and regrets that he cannot comply with his contractual obligation to submt a draft by 31 January, writing "I fear I have cannot give you anything at all yet. The book, as I am working it now, is a different and better thing from what I offered you [...] I was reluctant to write and declare to you that I could not fulfill my contract."
