His family had feared that John Daly would be assaulted over his support for the tramways due to antagonism from the jarvey drivers. She describes assaults by these men on "Fitz the vanman" and her uncle's threats to go to the Transvaal to fight in the Boer War against the British. She also describes problems with the new Night Watch.
