I.xv. Copy letters from Richard Lovell Edgeworth concerning his views on education,
1805-1806.
Edgeworth, in a letter to Francis Forbes dated 31 March 1805, outlines his views on the importance of learning the classics, drawing and geography, his recommendations for reading and the benefits of learning to fence and ride. Writing to his niece Sophy Ruxton in June 1805 he argues against the application compulsion in children's education, which he regards as a 'sedative' rather than a 'stimulant'. In a letter to the educationalist the Rev. Andrew Bell he requests Bell provide him with his 'observations' on educating the poor (11 June 1806); Bell's response is dated 23 Feb. 1807.
