Notes:Laurence McEvoy, born in 1854, was the president of the 1798 committee who organised the 1898 commemoration and laying of the foundation stone for the monument in Wolfe Tone St., Mountmellick, Co. Laois, on St. Stephen's Day 1898. This monument was erected as a memorial to the 11 United Irishmen who were hanged in Mountmellick on the 11th and 13th June 1798. One of them was Patrick Dunne who was Laurence McEvoy's great grandfather. Another of the men who was hanged, Willie Brock, was only 18 years old. McEvoy worked tirelessly to ensure that these 11 men would be honoured and not forgotten. As chairman of the 1798 Commemoration Committee he liaised with members of the Dublin branch of the Wolfe Tone Commemoration Committee and many of them visited Mountmellick and delivered public lectures (including Maud Gonne, John MacBride and Arthur Griffith). The foundation stone for the monument was laid on St. Stephen's Day 1898. Hundreds came from Offaly, Kildare, and Dublin, and many areas outside of these counties. Speeches were made by invited guests from United Irishmen Branches. Several bands provided the music for the ceremony. In December 1898 McEvoy undertook to organise collectors in the townlands around Mountmellick to raise funds for the completion of the monument. J. K. Bracken from Templemore was commissioned to complete the monument. Two of the men that were hanged, Willie Brock and Daniel Dunne were buried in Graigue Churchyard, and the other nine in the Ivy Chapel.
