Charles Howard, in his childhood letters, describes his life at a boarding school in Cheam, Surrey (reference is made to his studies and his being bullied), and later as an adult, he writes of family and business affairs, notably a petition heard in House of Lords concerning his succession to the title Earl of Wicklow [1870]. Letters are written from Surrey, Newport Pagnell, Melton Mowbray, London and the Curragh Camp. With some attached envelopes.

Sarah Howard, in her letters to her son written while he was at school, refers to family matters and her own daily schedule. In an letter dated October 1854 she also writes of an outbreak of cholera in Dublin. Letters are written from Bray and Glenart, Co. Wicklow and the home of her sister Caroline Finlay at Corkagh, Co. Dublin. Letters are mostly undated; with some attached envelopes.
